Blog 23: Senior Project Reflection

(1) Positive Statement

What are you most proud of in your block presentation and/or your senior project? Why?

Im most proud of being done with the project. Ive been waiting for this day since the beginning of the year. I really panicked and the beginning but all of this was so worth it!!! I love my topic and I really encourage people to do this topic as well.

(2) Questions to Consider

a.     What assessment would you give yourself on your block presentation (self-assessment)?

AE                AP       CR       NC

b.     What assessment would you give yourself on your overall senior project (self-assessment)?

AE       P          AP       CR       NC

(3) What worked for you in your senior project?
What worked for me was having hands on, on my topic. Being able to research it is one thing but actually doing work on it is another.

(4) (What didn't work) If you had a time machine, what would you have done differently to improve your senior project if you could go back in time?
I actually feel confident about everything that I did. I don't feel that I need to change anything

(5) Finding Value

How has the senior project been helpful to you in your future endeavors?   Be specific and use examples.
It actually has helped me because I want to pursue a career in psychology. Doing mentorship helped me because i now know for sure that i do want to pursue a career in this field. And having this experience it will make it much more easier for me to be able to get a job.

What is the most important thing you gained from this experience? Why?
The most important thing that I have learned from this experience is how to have better communication skills. I seek to pursue a career in psychology and I feel that this was the last push that I need to be one hundred percent sure about what I wanted to do with my life. I was very lucky to be able to mentor two amazing little girls that have let me into their lives.

How has what you’ve done helped you to answer your EQ?  Please explain.
During mentorship, I would struggle trying to get my mentees to talk to me at times. There were days that they did not ant to talk at all and I was not able to know what was wrong with them. At a point, once we started seeing each other often, I started to get to know them better and was able to encourage them to share their feelings. This helped me out by making me realize that what someone needs, is someone to be able to communicate with.

Blog 21: Exit Interview

(1) What is your essential question, and what are your answers?  What is your best answer and why?
What is the most effective way to help prevent suicidal thoughts?
Being able to communicate the way you feel can help prevent an unwanted event.
Creating a diary to write down all of the feelings you can not verbally say.
Making a daily schedule helps have ones goals present & prevent unplanned obstacles, for example suicidal thoughts, come in between.
My best answer is my first answer, ”Being able to communicate the way you feel can help prevent an unwanted event" because as many say, communication is key. Being able to communicate your feelings can help you get different point of views from different people. I made my answer official after reading the book, The Inner World of a Suicidal Youth written by Millie Osborne. Dr Osborne mentions in her book that although "Electra" the character of the story, would receive everything she wanted, she never received the therapy she needed and wasn't able to express her emotions, which lead her to commit suicide.
(2) What process did you take to arrive at this answer?
The process I took was doing outside research, besides research check. I attempted to go to mentorship every time I had possible. Mentoring two little girls that were in elementary school made it semi difficult for me to go for more than an hour and a half once a week. The time that I actually had with them I tried to use it as wisely as possible. I tried to get them to talk to much as much as I could. They started to get more and more attached to me the same way I did with them. In fact they told me once that their therapist advised them to keep a diary, but for them they preferred to talk to me.

(3) What problems did you face?  How did you resolve them?
I had difficulty trying to decide what my best answer would be. I feel that all of my answers are actually pretty good that choosing between the three was very difficult. The way I resolved it was trying to look at different research that I have previously done and came to the conclusion that both my research and hands on work, lead to being able to communicate your feelings to others for it never to become to late.

(4) What are the two most significant sources you used to answer your essential question and why?

The most significant sources is the book The Inner World of a Suicidal Youth by Dr Millie Osborne and my mentor Patricia Azevedo. Dr Millie Osborne is a writer along with a masters in Psychology. Patty has been in the psychology field for more than 30 years. She has an administrators credential, two masters, one in educational psychology and one in counseling, and lastly she has a license as a family and marriage therapist. Her position at the moment is a mental health psychologist at the Pomona District. Both the book and my mentor taught me to be able to live a mentally healthy life you have to be able to communicate the way you feel. By keeping things in just makes the ball grow bigger and bigger, that at the point that you want to stop it yourself, it becomes impossible.

Leelah Alcorn

"my death needs to mean something... fix society" are one of the last words of Leelah Alcorn a 17 year old girl. She left her suicide note on Tumblr explainig the reasons on why she committed suicide. Her parents, which were very religious Christians could not accept the fact that their child became a trans teen."When I was 14, I learned what transgender meant and cried of happiness," Leelah mentioned. Her mother not accepting who her daughter was and not taking in counter that she was putting her back towards Leelah, the only option Leelah felt she had was death. May people like Leelah have no one to talk to and are judged due to their sexuality. We have to understand that we affect many people by not giving them the needed support.

May you rest in peace Leelah Alcorn

INTERPRETIVE

APPLIED
What I did for my independent component is that I created a scrapbook explaining the different mental disorders that there is. I explained the symptoms and everything that has to do the type of mental disorders.

How did the component help you answer your EQ? Please include specific examples to illustrate how it helped.
It helped me see the different perspectives of the different types of mental disorders there is and it showed me that not all the disorders work the same way. It taught me that every mental disorder has a treatment, but not a cure. Having a treatment for the disorder it helps the patient have positive thoughts and not spend their whole day thinks about their disorder and of committing suicide.

My Interpretation

What does this picture mean to you? For me it is one of the most powerful drawings I've ever seen. Everyone has different morals and perspective of things, that they might disagree with my interpretation on this image. What I see is a person having death in there hands. They see the whole world grey and feel like they have nothing to live for . For them it may seem so easy to commit suicide that they might even see the "beauty" in death.
